I feel like it has been forever since I posted. Between a sick toddler who wasn't sleeping and a sick me who couldn't breathe well enough to work out, it's been a rough go. But I'm finally feeling OK, so let's go!

So yesterday was the official kick off of 5k season for me, and I thought I was completely unprepared. Unprepared because I missed 2 weeks of training because of a cold, and because I just didn't think I could do it.

I am proud to say, I was completely wrong. My body was ready, my brain was my roadblock.

The race was the Lady TuTu 5k at Easton. I love any reason to wear a TuTu, and I was doing it with one of my best friends and a huge inspiration to me, Shelly.

The weather was terrible. 40 degrees, cloudy, and threatening rain. I am not gonna lie, I was dreading it... TuTu or not. I made myself a promise. If I made it to Nordstroms (the 1 mile mark) I would allow myself to walk.

I focused on Nordstrom. As I was within steps of the store, I had a moment of Divine intervention and one of my absolute favorite songs to run to (Edge of Glory- Lady Gaga) came on. I decided, I was gonna run until the end of the song, then I would walk. As the song was ending, I realized how close to my good friend John's store I was, so I decided to run till I passed it. After rounding that corner, I saw PF Changs and decided that could be my walking point. As I rounded in front of PF Changs I saw this sign.

I realized I was ready to run a 5k. My body felt great. It wasn't raining. As I snapped that pic, my GPS gave me the 2 mile split. I was running 11:47 miles. I was actually going faster than I hoped.

No way in hell was I going to walk.

Even as I was blowing my nose at the 2.5mile mark... I was still jogging. As I hit 2.75 miles and turned towards the finish, "I can transform ya" came on my iPod. Another moment of Divine intervention. That song, has been my anthem as I get healthy. I'm sure that's not at all what Chris Brown intended, but it is my reminder that I can transform myself... and I am transforming myself.

When my cousin Jodi (another huge inspiration and cheerleader in my life) saw the 2 mile picture, she wrote "Breaking the mental barrier is the hardest part", "Time doesn't matter. The effort matters", and she told me she was proud of me. She was completely right (as she generally is). Once I stopped telling myself I couldn't do it, I did. My time didn't matter, because I tried hard all 3.1 miles. I had done something to be proud of.

My final time was 37:47. 12:27 splits.

I consider that a starting point.

By June, I intend to have splits of 11 minutes or quicker. By the end of 5k season (which for me is October- I don't do cold runs), I plan on being below 10 minute splits.

If you take one thing from this story, let it be Jodi's words "The effort matters". Don't sell yourself short or allow yourself to make excuses. Be as slow as you need to be, but finish what you started.

Before I sign off... I want to tell you all my personal distaste for the majority of "Best Running Playlists for this" or "Best Songs to Run to when that" lists that you find on the internet. They never make sense to me... who cares about BPM if the song isn't motivating. I want my playlists to have music that inspires me.

Here are my 2 favorite 5k playlists right now. I love them. The 1st is the one I used for the Lady TuTu 5k. The 2nd is the one I am using next weekend for the Spring Dash 5k.

Please leave a comment with your favorite playlist or song! I want to compile them and share.
Enjoy
Wanna know the quickest way to stop yourself from binge eating?

Run into someone you know when you are in sweatpants about to eat an entire plate of French Fries, aka my Sunday night.

I am a full on supporter of having 1 cheat meal a week. I think this keeps you sane. It gives you something to look forward to when you really don't want to eat another plate of grilled chicken and broccoli. 1 meal a week, I eat whatever I want (in a reasonable portion) and I feel totally fine about myself after. I also fully support the fact that if you are craving something that bad, eat it, cause if you don't it, you are going to binge eat whatever it was plus probably 3 other things. Sunday was neither a craving or a cheat meal.

My cheat meal this week was on Saturday night at my 9 year olds Cub Scout Banquet. We had lasagna, salad, and cake. It was delicious... but any one who reads this that knows me personally is thinking "I thought you don't eat gluten". You're right. I haven't been eating gluten for several weeks. So this was a cheat to the max. I woke up Sunday ill. I was miserable, I was completely lethargic, I just couldn't get myself woke up. I ate a green smoothie for breakfast, trying to perk myself up. I took a 2 hour nap, it did nothing. By dinner time I was over it. I wanted French Fries, I wanted BBQ, I wanted ice cream... and no one was going to tell me no.

Within 2 minutes of getting my food at City BBQ, I ran into someone I used to work with. It was like instant snap back to reality. I barely ate anything after that. It was like insta-shame. I knew all along I shouldn't be eating the garbage I was eating. Seeing someone who knows real Amanda was exactly what I needed.

I wanted to share this because I think it's really important to know its okay when you fall on your face, as long as you get back up.

I think this picture sums it up

I forgave myself for the gluten and the fries, and life was back to normal today.

My meal plan today

Breakfast
Greek Yogurt, Coffee, Banana
Lunch
Amazing, Healthy Chili My mom made for me. I will post the recipe soon! It was so good!
Snack
BBQ Habenero Almonds
Dinner
Grilled Chicken, Peppers, Onions on a bed of lettuce with salsa, black beans, and organic guacamole

I also managed to get a 3 mile walk/ run around my neighborhood in.

It was a damn good day.

Have a great week!!
XOXOX
A

OOOOOO... One more thing. I get to test my resolve tomorrow... In a moment of utter brilliance on my part I scheduled a lunch meeting at Der Dutchman.... I love noodles and fried chicken... this should be interesting.
I have a love/hate relationship with running.

I love burning calories.

I literally hate everything else involved with running.

4 years ago, I trained for a 5k. At that point in time I was running 3 miles, 3 times a week. I did it because it felt like what I should do, I lost a ton of weight, and I will admit I felt much better. But, I don't even remember liking it then.

So fast forward to now, because of the pregnancy and birth of the Toddler Tornado, and a whole lot of stress eating, I've got weight to lose again. I also have a super peppy- health coach friend who is a runner and keeps finding all these fun races for us to do. And if there is one thing I love, it's a reason to wear a tutu. Running it is.

First, I decided that I used to be able to run 3 miles easy... I would just pick up where I left off. That was a hilarious experience. Barely made it a mile, and discovered quickly exactly what plantar faciitis is.

I decided to use a C25K training app like I did last time. The only difference was, instead of running outside, I was going to do it on a treadmill. This Ohio winter was miserable, I don't do cold.

Today, I began 5 minute runs with 2 and a half minute walks in between. If I was outside, I probably would have jogged the 5 minutes at like an 11:30 pace... but being on a treadmill, I cranked it to 10 minute pace and forced myself to keep up.

It went really well for the first 90 seconds... It was down hill from there.

I started doing anything I could to keep my mind from allowing me to quit. The last two minutes of the first half mile run, I counted backwards from 120. It distracted me a little, but I was pissed to be running.

The second half mile began with the genius idea to block anything that showed time so I wouldn't be so fixated on how much longer I would be doing this. That lasted about 45 seconds. I couldn't take it. I went back to my counting.

The last half mile, I was desperate. I cannot be alone with my brain, and that's where I was. Alone with my brain and doing something I hate.

At this point, I thought "this run was going to kill me", and with that thought, my sick twisted brain had found something to think about to make it through. Could a treadmill kill someone? I mean not from them having a heart attack or something... but from the actual treadmill. And that's what I thought about, for the rest of the run. Funniest scenario involves the guy who wears jorts to the gym (there are a couple, I promise) having a string unravel from his ridiculous work out gear, wrapping around the motor of the treadmill and the treadmill bursting in flames.

The point of this rambling is- it was hard, I hated it, but I finished. The human mind is an amazing thing, but your brain can give out on you far before your body does in a workout. Your body is capable of things your brain "knows" you can't do. Feats of "Superhuman strength" when people lift 3000 lb cars off of children occur because people stop thinking and act.

You are capable of far more than you can imagine. Just do it, even if you have to distract yourself by making up death scenarios at the gym. Don't let your brain hold you back.

You are amazing.
Who knew you could throw spinach or kale in your protein shakes and it would be healthier and not taste funny?

Apparently half of the world, but I was late to the party so sue me!

I am obsessed with all things green right now! Kale, Spinach, doesn't matter to me... I am in.

Here are my 3 favorite green protein smoothies right now and their nutritional breakdown. Please keep in mind, these are not low in calories, I drink them as a meal replacement or after a long work out. Also any where you see vanilla protein powder, I was using a single scoop of Muscle Milk Vanilla.

**** note on the blender.

If you are going to make smoothies often, invest in a good blender, it makes life so much easier!

I use a Ninja Blender. I got it at Walmart for $99 and it came with individual travel cups to blend your smoothie in and take it with you on the go. I cannot sing the Ninja's praises enough.

Here is a link to the exact blender I have. Of course I would find it 30% cheaper after I already own it.

I lost 25 pounds relatively easy, kept it off for 4 months. Then life happened. In November, my boss began the interview process for our "territory" to double in size (or to lose our jobs). In December, we doubled. I took a new job in our organization that involved road travel. The holidays were here. I gained 10lbs in 2 months.

Wait, What!?!? I couldn't have gained more than a pound a week. That's crazy.

But I did.

Why? Because I stopped weighing myself weekly. I had no plan for eating when I was traveling. I let old habits of stress eating and convenience food come back into my world.

So here I am, needing to lose 50 more pounds, not 40.

But I'm not down... I'm Rededicated.

I look forward to sharing the restart of my journey... And the rest of it with you all.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11977964182013724911noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8891287462184567251.post-30278222782587584102013-08-23T11:40:00.000-07:002013-08-23T18:05:54.992-07:00My new obsession PB2 and PS I woke up Famous... Thanks Jillian MichaelsHave you all discovered the joy that is PB2 yet???

A friend of mine who is on an incredible inspiring weight loss journey turned me on to it a few days ago. I am beyond obsessed.

For those of you who don't know, PB2 is powdered peanut butter. How is powdered better than regular peanut butter... it only has 45 calories and 1.5 grams of fat!!!! What!!!! I love peanut butter, but have a hard time justifying that 200 of my 1300 calories are going away in two tablespoons. So I bought both versions they make ( regular and chocolate) and began experimenting.

4 TBS Fat free cool whip+ 1TBS PB2= peanut butter mousse fruit dip!! Holy cow so delicious and only 60 calories.

I have also tried a banana, chocolate PB2, and almond milk smoothie!!! So good!

My last experiment this week was actually following the directions on the container of PB2 and mixing 2TBS of PB2 with 1TBS of water to make "peanut butter". It actually made peanut butter! Same consistancy, same flavor, not as rich! I am sold!

On to other news. While I was sleeping last night I became mildly famous... And by mildly famous I mean Celebrity Trainer Jillian Michaels Retweeted my tweet about my weight loss and loving her book to her 930,000 followers on twitter. I woke up to tweets from all over the country congratulating me and telling me to keep it up!! Really, little old me!! That has to be one of the best ways to wake up!!

Having new twitter, Instagram, and blog followers is such a motivator for me to keep on my path, and keep posting healthy ideas to you all!

Have an amazing night! You can do this! I can do this! We can do this!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11977964182013724911noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8891287462184567251.post-62647506446690968732013-08-21T18:35:00.001-07:002013-08-21T18:35:00.430-07:00Hawaiian Turkey BurgersDinner tonight- Ahhhhmazing!
It was high protein, low fat--- best of all my über picky kid ate it!

I promised the recipe-- here it is!

Hawaiian turkey burger

1.25 lbs ground turkey

1/4 to 1/2 cup bread crumbs or a non gluten variation of

1/4 cup pineapple juice

8 or 9 shredded baby carrots (yeah I'm hiding veggies so sue me)

Grated onion to taste ( I don't like onion so I didn't use a lot)

Garlic salt (tsp)

Ground ginger (tsp)

Put all that in a bowl and mix well! I have to use myfitnesspal every day--- even on cheat days because if I skip one day, I skip 10.

I need to get gym routine back. 4 days a week, no excuses- because I need the habit re-developed.

The last two days I've been very focused. I had a major issue over gluten this weekend, and realized it was going to need to be cut down if not removed completely. How terrible I felt, refocused me. I found a great pin on Pinterest with swim work outs, picked a 2300 work out and headed to the gym. I used to swim more than this on a daily basis so no big deal right?

What was I thinking? 1st off the last time I probably swam 2300 yards straight was my senior year of HS 15 years ago. 2ndly for the last 3 years swim workouts for me were little 30 minute swims after my regular work out, and I was gonna swim triple that straight.

I'm a genius.

The workout I picked was actually great and had a lot of variety. At one point (early) I was thinking to myself "Heck ya I'm gonna nail this swim. " Below is the play by play of what actually happened and my thoughts

Warm up

300 Yard Free (I love swimming- I missed it so much)

100 Yard Kick (how come I'm not going anywhere, have I always kicked this slow)

Work out

5x100 interrupted IM - which means a 15 second break between each stroke- 45 second break between 100s (1st 3- I felt like an Olympian... Last 2 my butterfly laps looked like a 6yr old was swimming)

100 kick IM order (I hate kicking, why am I doing this, no one would know if I skip it) I didn't skip it FYI

4 x 100 alternating back and breast 100s (at this point math starts kicking in- how far have I swam, how many more laps till

a mile and I beginning thinking how much easier running is with that whole being able to breathe with out holding you face out of the water to do it)

12x50 free sprint (4 sprints in- I wanna die- I realize I hit a mile and it took me 52 minutes. 6 sprints in I'm so tired I get water up my nose during a flip turn and veto flip turns for the rest of the swim)

100 kick ( literally the slowest kicking ever- and all breast stroke)

300- Cool down (yeah I didn't do this because I was worried I was going to drown)

So I lasted for 2000. 1.2 miles. I think all things considered I did well. It did make me realize I missed swimming. It also made me realize I'm older and pulling my body weight through water now is a hell of a lot harder than it was when I weighed 125. But I was proud of myself when I was done, which felt great.

Night all- I'm gonna take a boatload of Advil and go to bed- I have a feeling I'm gonna be hurting tomorrow.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11977964182013724911noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8891287462184567251.post-50557036353426324052013-05-01T12:56:00.000-07:002013-05-01T12:56:12.897-07:00Surviving your coworkers

Let me start off by saying I love my job and I love my coworkers even more. But they are evil... Just kidding... kind of.

My office is literally my worst enemy as I am on this health journey. Being in my office to me feels like being an alcoholic working at a bar. We always have a fridge fully stocked with pop and gatorade, baskets full of cookies and chips, and candy jars all over the place. I am in a constant battle with myself to not pop into the kitchen and grab a snack every time I pass on my way to or from the copy room. It really does not help my mental stability to have Doritos and Oreos under my nose all day long. It also is not helpful that we constantly order out for lunch at work. Nothing is low cal that comes in a takeout box. Somehow, I fight the urges and I am staying on track. Three things are saving my diet.

1. I have to be in a bathing suit around these people in January. I picture myself in a bathing suit with Doritos stuffed under it. Not attractive right, so I don't eat them.

2. I have snacks stashed all over this office, it's a little crazy. Fridge, I have hummus, lo fat string cheese and fruit. Cabinets- I have popcorn. My desk- I keep sugar free oatmeal and sunflower seeds. My purse- walnuts. When the urge to snack hits me, I am within steps of something I can eat and feel completely okay with. It doesn't keep me from wanting the junk, but it makes it easier.

3. Eating out is the devil. I try to pack whenever I can, but some day's its impossible. You have to find a way to eat from the same places everyone else does with out screwing your diet. Take last week. It was a rough couple days. Thursday, I had an event for a regional office with a build your own burrito bar from qdoba... oh and alcohol. Are you kidding me? All of my favorites in one place. I found a way. I took a bowl of lettuce, added grilled chicken, salsa, grilled zucchini, and a tablespoon of guacamole. It was amazing tasting and I was proud of my will power. Also, tequila is considered "Paleo" but its 96 calories and no one needs an extra 96 calories- just don't do it.

Friday we had City BBQ at work. I love City BBQ. But I love the mac and cheese and brisket and baked beans, none of which I can touch. So here is what I did.

I took the City BBQ salad which is tomatoes, romaine, cucumbers, craisins, and shredded parm and added 4oz of smoked turkey and some apple vinaigrette dressing. It was amazing.

It's taken me several months to be comfortable in this office and not to blow my eating plan because no one else around me is eating healthy.

It's not easy, but its doable.

I just didn't want to go, I don't feel well, I'm hormonal and bloated, I really wanted to veg out.

Fortunately, I have cheerleaders. I knew Sheizka would be waiting at the gym, and I never want to let her down. So I called Jodi, and asked her to tell me to stop being lazy and go to the gym. She pep talked me and sent me a motivational photo. I packed up and went.

Thank God I did! I really feel a ton better. Well I do and I don't. I can't lift my arms the whole way over my head because I lifted my butt off, but everything else is better.

So just do it. Even when you don't want to. You will always be rewarded

I have been fighting bronchitis again and I think my allergies are to blame... Stupid pink blooming trees. Since I am sick, I haven't been able to work out, which blows, but it also means what I eat is extra important.

Here's what is on the menu for me this week.

This is everything I bought to eat this week. You will find I buy a lot of this stuff at Costco. Our family of 3.5 (Jackson doesn't really count yet) can easily eat fruits and veggies in bulk, but if you are the only person eating it, you are blowing money if you buy it in bulk and it goes to waste. C- means Costco, W- Whole Foods, G- Giant Eagle

Veggies
Corn on the Cob- C
Organic Lettuce- W
Celery- C
Tri Color Peppers- W
Asparagus- C
Carrots- C

Fruit
Bananas- C
Apples- C
Plums- C
Kiwi-C
Pineapple- C
Lemons- C

Everything Else-
Protein Powder- for daily shakes. Watch the sugar content in any that you buy!( I like Pro Complete One V Core in Fudge Caramel)
So delicious Sugar free Almond + Milk- W
Fresh Ground Peanut Butter- W
Low Fat Cottage Cheese- G (I used to eat light yogurt, till I realized the amount of sugar it had)
Tuna in water- G
Eggs- G
Multi Grain 100 Calorie English Muffin- G (The only "bread" I still eat- Yummy, high fiber, lo cal )
Chicken Breast
Walnuts
Pistachios
Low Fat String Cheese
Hummus

My food prep this week was easy. I really just loaded up my fridge with produce, brewed some coffee so it would be cold and ready in the fridge for protein shakes and made my favorite Tuna Salad to eat this week (recipe is below)

Make it a great week!!

My Tuna Salad
2 Hard Boiled Eggs chopped
2 Cans of Tuna in water- drained (do yourself a favor, get the good stuff- not the cheapest can you can find)
1 cup chopped celery
3 Tbs Dill Relish
3 tsp Yellow Mustard

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11977964182013724911noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8891287462184567251.post-2424506985038725562013-04-17T17:08:00.001-07:002013-04-17T17:08:53.032-07:00So I ate a potato...
I have promised to start posting my recipes and meals to give everyone ideas on what I am eating exactly... and I will... in a second. First, I have a confession. I ate a potato for dinner. I feel like I did something horrible, but I had reasons. Normally I don't eat carbs at all after lunch... and its rarely something as nutritionally void as a potato. But today we had a meeting at work and there were potato chips and I realized I really wanted some ruffles bad, like take the bag and hide in a room and scarf them all down, bad. I didn't- mainly because there were people near the bag who would have noticed me running out the room with them. It was so hard though. So for dinner I made two small red skin potatoes and ate them joyously. It may not have been that great for me, but it wasn't the ruffles bag full of shame.

Okay on to my meal plans. Today, aside from the potato, I feel like I ate great. I was super full all day. I had 94 g of protein, 25 grams of fiber, and only 6g of saturated fat. As of now I am at 1100 calories, but I will eat some sort of snack before bed to make it closer to 1300.

Okay so for breakfast I had a protein shake.

I love my morning protein shake!!
My recipe is
12 oz- Unsweetened Almond Milk (I use "So Delicious Almond +" because it has 5g protein)

1 scoop protein powder (I use Pro Complete One V- Core in Fudge Caramel)
and 1 cup cold coffee (Brew it the night before, stick in the fridge)

It tastes like a frappuccinno! LOVE!

For Lunch I had a random plate of yummy stuff

On the plate is 3 oz grilled chicken (make it on Sunday, eat it all week)
Baby Carrots, Cucumbers and Raw Zucchini dipped in hummus (Sabra singles at Costco- OMG!!!)
Half a Kiwi and 1 cup of Seedless Grapes
Tasted great! Like summer on a plate.

My husband was pumped to see red meat!

I cooked the potatoes in the microwave (5 minutes wrapped in a wet paper towel) then I sprinkled rosemary, garlic, salt and pepper on them and a small squirt of olive oil from my pampered chef oil atomizer.

The zucchini was sauteed over medium heat with just two small squirts of olive oil and garlic and salt. I could have eaten 3 servings

Lastly the grass fed beef- Broiled in the oven- 6 minute per side on low then 2 minutes per side on high (they were super thick) I used Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and Lawry's seasoned salt on it while they cooked.

I had lowfat string cheese for a snack today and I will probably eat celery and all natural peanut butter as soon as I am done posting this.

Hope this gave you ideas :)
I promise to get better with posting yummy food ideas.
Through the first 65 days I am down 20lbs. It has been a hell of a learning experience. Pretty much everything I thought I knew about diet has been thrown out the window at this point.

Here's just a few of the things I thought I knew, but clearly did not.

1.) Doesn't matter what I eat as long as I am under 1300 calories at the end of the day-
I blame weight watchers for this stupid idea. I have been on weight watchers twice, this is what I remember from it. I can eat fun size bag of cheetos for the same amount of points as a grilled chicken. Really? Nutritionally void food vs a high protein, low carb food- same difference in my daily points. Cheetos won out on every stressful day I had, and I wasn't cheating on my diet, woo hoo! I gained every ounce back I lost on weight watchers as soon as I went off it. I never learned better habits cause I didn't have to. I am learning now. I have learned that on weeks where I submit to stuff I know in my heart I shouldn't eat instead of healthy options with the same calories, I lose less weight and I'm hungry. Or I I feel terrible, french fries absolutely piss my stomach off... so does donuts. I know now- being under 1300 calories matters but what matters more is that you fill that 1300 calories with nutritionally dense, protein rich, fiber filled food.

2.) I can still eat all the carbs I want and hit my goals.-
I'm not gonna pretend for one second I cut out carbs, cause I didn't. I still eat fruit daily, I still eat a bag of baked lays when I am dying for a salty snack, and oatmeal will always be my favorite breakfast. What I have learned is to control my carb intake big time. I eat no more than 50-80 grams of carbohydrates a day. Carbs are mildly evil. They cause insulin spikes which cause fat storage. Insulin also makes you more hungry. I made the mistake of a skinny cow ice cream right before bed a couple weeks ago, I woke up the next morning and it felt like I had been starving myself for weeks, ravenous. I also try to eat all my carbs prior to 2pm. It gives my body time to burn it away before I go to bed. I know now- curbing carb intake is a key in healthy weight loss. You will stop being hungry if you watch the carbs, I promise.

3) If I skip breakfast, I have more calories to eat through out the day.-
I hate breakfast, well I hate morning in general and breakfast is a part of it. Putting food on my stomach first thing in the morning used to make me gag. Unfortunately for me, study's show that people who eat breakfast daily weigh less than people who don't. A belly full of protein for breakfast will keep you full and going strong all morning long. I completely advocate bacon and eggs in the am. Well egg beaters or egg whites and turkey bacon (we are trying to get healthy right). As far as I go, I have one of 3 things for breakfast. Oatmeal because I love it, a protein shake, or if its the weekend egg whites and turkey sausage. I know now that I feel better and have more significant weight loss when I eat breakfast.

That's it for tonight. I hope you all learn from my mistakes, because your health journey will be easier for it. Tomorrow or Wednesday I am going to begin posting some of my favorite recipes to help you all along!

Make it a great week!
I have said from the start I would share my mistakes on this blog, well Sunday I discovered I was making a big mistake and I hope you all learn from this.

I am a cardio girl. I love it. From the time I was a teenager, I could park myself on an elliptical for more than an hour at a time. When I was on swim team as a teenager, practice in the pool at 5:30 didn't bother me... lifting weights bothered me. Now as I am on this health journey, the main way I have been loosing weight is through pure cardio. I rarely have crossed the dreaded line into the weight training part of the gym.

Enter my trainer, who happens to be one of my closest friends Sheizka. From day one, she has forced me into strength training. I have dreaded every minute. Complaining the whole time that I am just not burning calories and right now all that matters in getting rid of fat is cardio.

I was wrong. So fricking wrong.

Last weekend I bought a heart rate monitor. The first time I wore it was Sunday for our normal training session. I jumped on the elliptical for 30 minutes and according to my heart rate monitor, in that 30 minutes I burnt 325 calories- awesome right! Enter Sheizka. It was leg day so we did 45 minutes of leg strength training and 15 minutes of abs. I burnt 613 additional calories in that 60 minutes. 938 CALORIES TOTAL!!! For those of you doing the math... I burnt the same number of calories per minute doing cardio as I did when I was strength training. But while I was strength training I was building the muscles that would speed my metabolism and help me burn more calories when I am not in the gym!

So because I am always skeptical, Tuesday I decided to try 30 minutes cardio/ 30 minutes arms, chest and back to see what my calorie burn looked like. 350 calories on the elliptical, 375 strength training, 725 total.

I am a believer in strength training. Sheizka, sorry I have been so whinny.

What you should learn from this-

#1- Get a heart rate monitor, a real one with chest strap. It doesn't have to be really expensive- I got mine from Target it was $69.00 (its a pink New Balance). The machines at the gym are usually 30% off... if your trying to lose weight, 30% can screw your weight loss. Also, you work outs will be more productive and dare I say more exciting when you can watch those calories float away.

#2- Strength train. Even if you don't have a gym membership, you can still strength train. Push ups, squats, lunges... find a way to get it in.

#3- If you are paying someone to help you get fit (which I recommend if you can afford it!!!) don't whine. They obviously know what they are doing or people like you wouldn't be paying them.

Happy Calorie Burning!!!!
Warning this post is going to be long because its the foundation of what I'm doing to lose the weight.

So how did I start untrapping my healthy girl?

It all began February 9th this year. It's a really random date, but I had reason. Lifetime fitness was hosting a spring 90 day weight loss challenge... and I love a competition, so I joined. My weigh in was at 9am February 9th. The minute my weigh in was over I jumped right in. The competition was springboard I needed to find a healthy me.

So here was my plan, It's been modified along the way and I will share all of that... but I figured lets start from the beginning.

First, I set my goals.

My goals- 50 lbs by my works trip to Punta Cana in Jan 2014

I want to get rid of my baby pouch. C sections ruin your body

I want to be proud of my arms and be strong enough to do real push-ups

Second, I found my Cheerleaders

You need cheerleaders, cause you are gonna want to quit at random times. When you slip up and eat an entire bag of chips, when you have a bad day and want comfort food, when it's that time of the month- you will be over the diet. Your cheerleaders wont let you quit. Find people who can tell you no! I wish I could say my biggest cheerleader is my husband, but he's not. He cheers me on for sure, but he will always give in when I say I really just need french fries. My biggest cheerleaders are my cousin Jodi and my good friend Sheizka. I couldnt do this with out them. Jodi is the best at random inspirational texts, I get them all the time- and each one pushes me or helps me to make better decisions. Sheizka aside from being my good friend is also a trainer (wait till we get into my training stories, LOL) and knows massive amounts about nutrition. Shes who I turn to most to tell me no. Actual conversation Me- I've got the flu and can't hit the gym today Sheizka- I will say a prayer for you to get better. Also, dont eat any sugar- I know you want to but it suppresses your immune system, so don't. I love them both and hope they both know how important they are in my journey

Third, do some sort of detox "cleanse"to begin

People are terrified of cleanses, I was originally too. The principals of all detox cleanses are pretty similar. You drink or take fiber supplements, as well as pills that detoxify your system. Then towards the end of the cleanse you begin taking probiotic supplements to restore your healthy intestinal bacteria. While on the cleanse you eat fruits, veggies, meat, and nuts. Aim to drink at least a gallon of water a day. No dairy, no gluten, nothing processed! This truely clears out all the gunk out of your body and preps your body to better absorb nutrients from all the healthy foods you are gonna be eating. Your gonna spend alot of time in the bathroom the first few days and probably have a monster headache around day 3. But it passes and if you are like me you will drop some weight (5lbs in 10days). I used the cleanse from Advocare, I love it. But all nutrition stores and gyms like Lifetime sell them as well.

Fourth, decide what method you are going to use after detox to continue weight loss

There are a million plans to lose weight. Do your research, find one thats realistic for your life! I have friends having success with all of them Medifast, Paleo, Weight Watchers. Whats important is that you eat less calories than you burn every day, and that you eat nutritionally dense foods.

I dont use any plan- except my own. I eat 1300 net calories a day of healthy, real food and I give myself one cheat meal a week. Whats net calories. It's calories you eat minus calories you burn doing cardio and strength training. I am currently loosing 1.5-2lbs a week

Fifth, I made myself accountable

Get the "myfitnesspal" app- or sign up on myfitnesspal.com- No, seriously do it. Without a doubt it's the best tracking tool I have ever used. Almost every food you can think of is preloaded into it... just type what you eat and it adds it to your tally. You can "friend" other people using the app and they can encourage you!

So there's how I started. As the blog goes on I will get into more of what I actually eat and how its prepared. But Its definately working. I feel like I should introduce myself to the people who dont know me like I am at a 12 step meeting. "Hi, I'm Amanda. I am addicted to carbs." That's how weight loss blogs are supposed to start, right? But in all fairness that isn't me.

I'm Amanda.
I'm addicted to my kids. I've got a 6 month old and an 8 year old, both boys.
I'm addicted to my husband. We are coming up on 10 years of marriage.
I'm addicted to my career. I am with a Fortune 200 company as a State Operations Coordinator.
I'm addicted to high heels and Coach handbags.
That's me.

All of those addictions above have put me in the situation I am in now. I'm 33, I'm overweight, and I'm not happy with the way I look or feel.

My job kicks my butt daily... and most of the time because of that, I am too tired to even think about preparing dinner. So fast food or takeout it is. Oh, did I mention I am a stress eater?

My family keeps me busy and I care most about taking care of them... I could care less about taking care of myself.

How do shoes and handbags play into being overweight? They are comforting. No matter how heavy I get, no matter what pants wont button, they still fit. So I buy them, a lot of them.

In January of 2013, I decided I needed to change my life. Why? I wish it was something of major importance; to live longer for my kids, to get to spend more years with my husband, so I am not so exhausted after at work.

Don't get me wrong, those things matter. But this is happening because for once in my life I decided to be vain. I want to look good. I'm gonna be spending a week in the tropics with my coworkers in Jan 2014 and I want to look good in my bathing suit. Mostly, I hate fat girl clothes, and I hate having to shop in the "Womens" section, barf. I wanna be able to shop where ever I want.

So I'm here. 60 days into changing my body. I am down 17.5lbs. Why the blog now? Today, 5 separate people have asked me what I am doing to lose the weight. So I started it. The people who want to follow my journey to learn from my success (and probably more often than not, my mistakes), can... and if you are already skinny you don't have to hear me preach it on Facebook.

Oh- and the title of my blog- Healthy girl trapped.... Originally, I was thinking "Skinny girl trapped in a fat girls body"... but its most important to me that I stress I am being super healthy about this. No fad diet or miracle pills here. Healthy.

I am a healthy girl trapped... with awesome addictions that have caused unhealthy habits.

I have a feeling that some of you are healthy girls trapped too- whether its in a fat body, or a situation you don't wanna be in. This is for you, and I hope this blog gives you an outlet- because a healthy weight loss journey can be a lonely place. Lonely sucks.
